Put Your Lipstick Away, Love
February 7 2019
I've made no secret of the fact that I hate highly staged, make-up caked and filtered-to-death photos of female artists posing with their work. Are you an artist or a fame-hungry insta-wannabe? I strongly believe that using your face as currency undoes centuries of hard work. The struggle of female artists to be recognized for the quality of their work rather than the color of their lipstick was, and still is, a killer. Be damned if you are one of those women who does it. It does neither your artistic sisters - nor the art world as a whole - a favor. If I showed you photos of what I look like when I work, you'd be disgusted. Being a sculptor isn't glamorous - especially for a woman. It's hard on your body: you feel nauseous with chemical fumes, your skin suffers, your hair is dry, your head aches, your limbs scream at the end of the day and your hands are ripped to shreds. Here's Barbara Hepworth showing us how it's done. She doesn't need filters or make up. She is FUCKING REAL. Beautiful because and in spite of the physical effort.
