Odd Jelly Out

2017 - 22

Fiberglass, glass, resin, steel, mirror, plaster, wood, LEDs. 7.5ft x 30ft x 30ft (entire installation).

Odd Jelly Out is now on permanent display at Rainier Square, downtown Seattle, WA.

Drawing inspiration from Jelly Babies, the iconic British candy, Odd Jelly Out is a large-scale, expansive installation, described in The Independent (UK) as one of ‘the best artwork[s] from Burning Man 2018’, and by The Stranger’s arts writer, Jasmyne Keimig, as a ‘fun meditation on what it’s like to be an outsider’. It was originally conceived to champion the outsider and encourage a broader conversation about diversity, loneliness and marginalization.

It has evolved into a wide-reaching, five year project whose influence has spread across the world, being featured in news and lifestyle publications such as The Independent, Vogue Netherlands, designboom, Creapills France, Athens Voice and My Modern Met. Iterations of Odd Jelly Out have been shown across the US and the OJO family diaspora has moved from the Pacific Northwest to South America, Asia and Europe. A customized OJO was even taken on a NASA research mission to the Atacama Desert in early 2018.

Each named after famous sculptors, twenty illuminated glass and mirrored characters formed the basis of an immersive, six-week solo show at Fogue Gallery in Seattle WA, in April - May 2019. A custom soundscape was designed for the show by Portland-based composer and musician, Stuart McLeod.

Variations of this project have also been shown as part of the Seattle Deconstructed Art Fair in 2021 at Ryan James Fine Arts, Kirkland (WA), as well as in temporary public art exhibits at 2+U Plaza, Seattle (WA); PDXWLF, Portland (OR); Downtown Park, Redmond (WA); and Burning Man, Black Rock City (NV). The final iteration of Odd Jelly Out is now on permanent show at Rainier Square, downtown Seattle (WA).
